Work Life Balance and Burnout

  • Joint APTA Grant
  • APTA Alaska has been jointly awarded a grant to investigate burnout and work life balance, and other top issues. A survey of Alaska APTA members identified work life balance and burnout as a top concern of respondents.
  • APTA has great resources to improve clinician well-being, prevent burnout, and encourage self-efficacy:
    • A short 2 page guide on how to recognize self burnout, build resilience, and foster well-being.
    • This four-part paid course package offers a comprehensive approach to well-being for both providers and their patients. Participants learn how to prevent burnout through evidence-based strategies including mindfulness, self-compassion, leadership practices, and workplace improvement. These skills can improve job satisfaction, and be utilized in patient care.
    • This study investigated the prevalence of burnout in physical therapists in the United States and the relationships between burnout and education, mentorship and self-efficacy. Mentorship and self-efficacy are associated with lower burnout in physical therapists in the United States
    • This course from CSM 2025 teaches effective resilience interventions, such as qigong, hatha yoga, and meditations. Advocating for employer support, in the form of training and resources, is also a crucial component of resiliency.
    • This is a great 35 minute podcast featuring an interview with APTA’s Vice President of Strategic Affairs on how to avoid PT burnout, find community, and get involved in advocacy. They discuss how to start a business, prevent burnout, tips for new graduates, new technologies, and how the physical therapy profession is changing.
    • A course which teaches self reflection and identification of barriers and supports in order to foster competence, safety, ethical behavior, professional development, and well-being.
